Pokud se vydáte do Méridy, hlavního města starověké Lusitanie, pravděpodobně vás nejdřív uchvátí slavné římské památky – amfiteátr, divadlo nebo akvadukt. Ale kousek stranou od hlavního turistického proudu se skrývá malý, tichý klenot: Xenodoquio de Mérida. Tento raně křesťanský útulek – či spíše nemocnice pro poutníky – založený v 6. století biskupem Masonou, je jedinečným svědectvím o době, kdy byla Mérida významným duchovním centrem. Xenodoquio poskytovalo přístřeší a péči poutníkům, kteří přicházeli uctít svatou Eulálii, a zároveň sloužilo chudým a nemocným obyvatelům města. Ačkoliv dnes z budovy zůstaly jen skromné základy a zbytky zdí, místo má silnou atmosféru. Nachází se v klidné čtvrti Santa Catalina, kousek od baziliky sv. Eulálie, a je volně přístupné. Archeologické práce zde odhalily půdorys stavby, který nese vlivy byzantské architektury – zajímavý detail, který ukazuje kulturní propojení tehdejší církve s východním Středomořím.
