🚇 Sydenham 🍺 £5.50 Heineken The Alfred is perched on a corner at the eastern end of Sydenham Road in Sydenham, southeast London. The nearest station is Sydenham, on the Windrush Line. The pub was built in 1862, opening under the name The Prince Alfred. Around 2015, it was renamed simply ‘The Alfred’—much like many pubs that have shortened their names. Sadly, many ‘Arms’ have been lost in the last twenty years. This traditionally decorated one-bar pub features a large central servery that dominates the bar. To the left is a cosy seating area with a sofa, winged chairs, a period fireplace, and a proper pub carpet. Nearby, there’s a dartboard and a large screen for watching sport. In front of the servery, rows of poser tables and stools lead to a pool table at the far end. The mustard yellow and burgundy walls are adorned with mirrors, signs, and a jukebox for playing tunes. Outside, benches line the front for a pint in the sun. The beer lineup will please the masses and includes one cask ale. I went for a Heineken—my pint was excellent and pleasingly cost less than six quid. There’s no food served, but there is a selection of bar snacks available if you’re feeling peckish. I arrived at 11 a.m. on a warm, overcast Saturday morning in July. I was the first through the door and was soon joined by Ryan, a local who’d recommended I visit the pub. We had a great chat about pubs we’d both been to and caught a bit of the Lions game—top fella. The service was first class; Kerry was personable, witty, funny, and the consummate host. I really enjoyed my time here. If I wasn’t visiting other pubs that day, I could’ve stayed for the sesh. What a cracking, characterful pub — loved it here. A must-visit if you’re in the area. 📅 26th July 2025 If you want to see all my pub reviews in one place, head to @londonpubmap on Instagram. 🍻
