Neue Wache in Berlin
Über
German classicism was vividly expressed through this building - a change of eras, the alteration of symbols, restructuring, the arrival of the new, and the abolition of the old are characteristic of the Neue Wache. Here resides the "Mother with her Dead Son" - a monument upon which rainwater pours during bad weather, resembling the tears of the entire weary German nation during World War II. Once, an eternal, life-giving flame burned, and the guard solemnly patrolled its domain without pause. Today, it only appears on the National Day of Mourning, and the victorious Nike reminds us of the glorious days of the Prussian army in every war for freedom and change of regimes.

A simple yet poignant memorial stands as a testament to the lives lost. A mother holds her deceased son, and the open roof of the statue allows the rain to fall upon it. This sight alone would have been a powerful reminder of the tragedy. It’s a place where visitors can come to pay their respects and find solace in a silent remembrance of the past.
