Have recently visited twice just for afternoon drinks in the garden area. Service was very courteous, friendly and attentive on both occasions. Food looks very appetising and we plan to book for a meal there very soon.

Been twice this summer and we're returning for a birthday meal next week. The term 'gastro-pub' is frequently misused to described mediocre eateries serving run-of the-mill pub grub arranged fancilly on modestly sized plates. To their great credit, The Bear is a welcome exception to such dissapointing experiences. It serves exceptional restaurant standard meals at affordable prices in a newly refurbished bar, that also boasts a large external patio and beer garden. On our first visit three of us selected our own choice of starters and main courses from the menu. All of the dishes were cooked to perfection (including the fish) and presented appealingly. The food is freshly prepared and is nicely chosen to mix quality ingredients and complimentary flavours. It compares very favourably with many restaurants that would charge double the price simply because they have a mention in a foodie guide book. Our second visit was for Sunday Lunch. We opted for the black pudding and apple bon bons, and the calamari as small starter dishes, followed by the traditional roast beef dinner. Once again everything was well cooked and seasoned perfectly. The beef came as two generously thick slices, which was a pleasant surprise having been seriously dissapointed by the portion sizes in some other pubs in the vicinity. The roast potatoes were crisp on the outside, soft in the centre. Veg was red cabbage, carrot and broccoli all cooked perfectly. The Yorkshire pudding went down a treat with the bone marrow gravy. If your hungry get a side of the tasty cauliflower cheese, it's fantastic! I forced myself to have a slice of the chocolate lime and pistachio tart. What a treat! All in all I'd say other local eateries like the Grosvenor Arms, The Pheasant and the White Horse will need to up their game. There's a new pub in town and it's a belter.

Great pub with a modern menu at reasonable prices and good portions. Lovely setting in center of Tattenhall. Great dining area with views of the chefs in the kitchen. Two outdoor areas with ample seating. All of the staff were very friendly. Id highly recommend a visit and worth the drive slightly out of Chester.
