About

The Jaffe Memorial Fountain, an iconic piece of Belfast's historical landscape, stands as a testament to both craftsmanship and familial tribute. Constructed in 1874 using Portland stone, this attraction features an intricate design adorned with graceful female figures, each embodying one of the four seasons. These artistic touches lend it a timeless elegance that's appreciated by visitors of all ages. In its bright yellow and white hues, the columns symbolize purity and light, drawing eyes to its striking form in the heart of the city. Originally erected by Sir Otto Jaffe to honor his father, Daniel Jaffe, the fountain not only pays homage to the past but also celebrates Otto Jaffe's legacy as Belfast's first Jewish Lord Mayor. Following a meticulous restoration by Eura Conservation in 2007, the fountain has been revived to its former glory. Twinned with the Russell Fountain in Limerick, this historical site serves as a reminder of cultural connections and civic pride. Whether you're here with family or exploring solo, the Jaffe Memorial Fountain offers a serene yet vivid insight into Belfast's rich history.

The Jaffe Memorial Fountain is a historic landmark in Belfast, located at the Victoria Street entrance to Victoria Square. Erected in 1874, it was a gift from Sir Otto Jaffe in honor of his father, Daniel Joseph Jaffe, a prominent figure in the city's linen trade. The ornate, gilded cast-iron structure originally served as a drinking fountain. After falling into disrepair and being moved multiple times, it was meticulously restored and returned to its original location in 2008. The fountain is a beautiful reminder of Belfast's industrial heritage and the significant contributions of its Jewish community.

A striking fountain, the colour stands out amid the surrounding buildings. At the weekends, it is a gathering place for the local youth to sit and chat, so it can be hard to get a clear photograph. It is free to view. The fountain is visually accessible to people who use a wheelchair. There are steps up, so it is tactically accessible for people with vision issues. Though, care would need to be taken at the edge as there is no barrier.

This fountain feels like it doesn’t even belong in the city—in the best way possible. Its bright yellow color is so eye-catching, and the contrast with the surroundings creates a stunning visual harmony. I loved it
