Amatller Palace in Barcelona
About
Walking along Passeig de Gràcia, you may come across a series of unusual buildings that sharply stand out from the overall architectural rows. The Amatller House, which became a true family palace for a Spanish chocolatier, is part of the so-called "Block of Discord" and is a protected national monument.
The house acquired its unconventional "appearance" in just two years, thanks to the tireless efforts of an entire staff of craftsmen under the command of a talented architect. From a distance, the roof of this "Amatller marvel" resembles an Egyptian pyramid, while the pediment is "crowned" with an allegorical depiction of the renowned homeowner. The top floor of the Gothic building is owned by the Institute of Spanish Art, which houses an extensive library.
