Die Handelsbörse Antwerpen, im Kern ein historisches Baujuwel mit epischer Dimension: 1531 als erste eigens errichtete Warenbörse der Welt eröffnet, gilt sie als Mutter aller Börsen, Modelllieferant für Städte wie London, Amsterdam oder Rotterdam. Die schöne Vorhalle war einst offene Versammlungsfläche, damit selbst „Gott den Handel beobachten konnte“. Die Handelsbörse wurde Opfer von zwei verheerenden Bränden: einmal 1583, erneut 1858. 1872 erhob sich das heutige Gebäude, ein prachtvoller Neogotik-Neubau mit Eisen-Glas-Konstruktion, entworfen von Joseph Schadde. Bis 1997 war die Börse aktiv, dann fusionierte sie mit der Brüsseler Börse (heute Euronext) und verlor ihre Funktion. Jahrelang verfiel das Bauwerk, bis ab 2016 eine umfassende Renovierung begann. Heute ist die Handelsbörse ein lebendiger Veranstaltungsort mit kostenlosen Besucherzugang: täglich geöffnet von 10-18 Uhr.
