When I take the bus to York I often get off near St Lawrence and have always been intrigued by the tower and church beyond. Today I spotted a Church Open sign so popped in and found a coffee morning raising funds for repair to one of the large stained glass windows. The tower is all that remains of the original church; the newer building is beautiful with high vaulted ceilings, a large church organ and a mix of pews and chairs. Outside there is a large carpark which is being resurfaced and there is an easy access ramp into the church. In the entrance there’s a large Peace bell and opposite that a stunning stained glass window installed in recent years(see photos). The church is a well used space used throughout the week for lots of activities. The pews are moved aside for the annual beer festival. I love stained glass so it was a real treat to see such a display of twentieth century stained glass and windows designed by females. A beautiful building with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
