Very special restaurant in DC. Service was great and the ambience inside is something you don't get to see everyday. Music that matches the nice style of the restaurant. Finally a place where you can taste real coffee. Totally recommended, I will come back for sure!

I had an incredible time with an old friend. Butterworth’s has great cocktails, great food, and great patrons — one of whom brought in CS Lewis’s The Abolition of Man and was delighted to talk about it, another whom gave us her olives and made conversation about our Midwestern roots, and the other who insisted that we stay in touch because she saw great things ahead in our futures. The bartender, Caleb, enthusiastically interjected as he heard us discussing The Canterbury Tales as a way of decoding the female psyche. As we discussed the moral of The Wife of Bath’s Tale, the woman to our left chimed in and said, “That is SO true.” A long, joyful, meandering conversation followed, and we received advice: my friend needed to lighten up [with women], and I needed to become more mysterious. She gave us a hug before leaving. If I lived in the area, this would be my go-to bar to have a laugh, consider how we ought to live, and smile at a stranger to turn them into a friend. Thank you for the wonderful time! I hope I can come back soon. Something about this inspired me, and while I can’t put my finger on it, I know that I left a better person who has more fully lived as a result.
