About

The Burgtheater has had an unusual history from the very beginning. Its construction started in 1741 by order of Empress Maria Theresa, who found one of the palace halls, intended for playing ball, standing empty. During World War II, the building was nearly destroyed and faced a long period of reconstruction. However, today, there is no hint of the hardships the theater has endured. This magnificent building attracts both theater-goers and ordinary tourists every day, who simply wish to walk under its pristine arches.
