About
St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, a striking bastion of modern and expressionist architecture, stands prominently with its 58-meter height. Opened on May 5, 1971, this concrete brutalist structure is a collaborative masterpiece by architects like Pier Luigi Nervi and Pietro Belluschi. The cathedral's design, marked by I.M. Pei's influence, captures attention with its saddle-shaped roof-a seamless blend of concrete and glass that symbolizes both grandeur and simplicity. Inside, the ultra-modern layout offers a unique interior experience highlighted by a stunning stained glass ceiling forming a massive cross, while religious emblems enrich the spiritual atmosphere. Visitors can immerse themselves in the cathedral's exceptional acoustics during the weekly organ recitals on Sundays, surrounded by breathtaking views of San Francisco. A suggested donation of $10 enhances accessibility, allowing everyone to appreciate its magnificent blend of art and architecture.

Been coming here for almost 2 years now. The inside is an interesting design. Very much post Vatican 2. The local Catholics like to joke and call the church our lady of the spin cycle or our lady of Maytag. It’s all in good fun. I love that this church is typically where the archbishop frequence for his special masses. This also has a really strong ongoing parish community. We sometimes will join for the after church coffee hour, which is nice and my husband has been involved in their reviving Knights Of Columbus chapter. Definitely come check out the cathedral if you’re nearby.

Amazing church, modern, brutalist... to be visited
