Het Nationaal Koopvaardijmonument ( ook bekend onder de naam- De Boeg ) is een met blank Canadees aluminium bedekte staalconstructie , voorstellende een scheepsboeg die golven klieft . De sculptuur is geplaatst op een betonnen voetstuk . Voor het voetstuk is een bronzen beeldengroep geplaatst van 5 mannenfiguren die door een kabel verbonden zijn . Onder de kabel is in reliëf het kielzog van een schip aangebracht. Het voetstuk is 2 meter hoog en 13 meter breed. De tekst op het voetstuk luidt : " Zij Hielden Koers " Het monument staat symbool voor de triomfantelijke herrijzenis na de bevrijding . De Boeg in Rotterdam eert de Nederlandse koopvaardij in oorlogstijd en herrinert aan de 2134 Nederlandse en 1414 niet-Nederlandse zeelieden die in de geallieerde strijd tegen de bezetter zijn omgekomen. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog vervoerden schepen van de Nederlandse koopvaardij soldaten en voorraden ( voedsel en wapens ) voor Engeland en Rusland . Dit was gevaarlijk werk , omdat de zee onveilig werd gemaakt door Duitse en Japanse duikboten . Ook vielen vliegtuigen de schepen aan met torpedo´s en bommen. In die periode zijn 421 Nederlandse koopvaardijschepen ten onder gegaan en verloren 3375 opvarende het leven.
