About

Basilica Papale di San Paolo Fuori le Mura is a gem of Neoclassical architecture, masterfully designed by Luigi Poletti after a devastating fire in 1823. This colossal basilica, located just south of the old Aurelian Wall and a short 10-minute walk from the Basilica St. Paul Metro Station, stands as a testament to both history and faith.

Originally constructed in the 4th century on the believed burial site of St. Paul, it was rebuilt in the early 19th century and now enjoys the revered status of a Papal major basilica. The structure features an impressive atrium, a golden mosaic facade, and a mesmerizing central nave adorned with a marble floor and coffered ceiling.

Visitors are captivated by the medieval ciborium, the grand candelabrum, and the richly-decorated apse mosaics. Intriguingly, the basilica also houses portraits of every Pope, alongside the treasured remains of St. Paul.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a major destination for Catholic pilgrims but tends to be less crowded than other iconic spots in Rome. Accessibility is a highlight, with an easy bus ride from the city center and ample parking.

Rated 4.8 on Google, it's an unmissable attraction for anyone exploring the spiritual and architectural wonders of Rome.
