Der ursprüngliche Jakobstorkomplex, der im frühen 14. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde, war ein wichtiger Eingang und Ausgang zur Stadt. Alle wichtigen Nah- und Fernhandelswege Richtung Westen und Süden (z. B. von bzw. nach München, Augsburg und Nürnberg), die nicht über die Steinerne Brücke führten, begannen und endeten hier. Im Dreißigjährigen Krieg, bei den Kämpfen um Regensburg, wurden das Jakobstor und die zur ehemaligen Prebrunnbastei im heutigen Herzogspark gehörende Nordmauer zur Donau hin besonders stark beschossen. Die letzten Reste der neugotischen Umbauten verschwanden 1957, bis auf die erhalten gebliebenen Wallanlagen.
