The Carraia Bridge was the second bridge built after the Ponte Vecchio and was originally called the New Bridge (Ponte Nuovo). The first mention of a wooden bridge on this site dates back to 1218. This bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1274. It was soon rebuilt, but by 1304 it had sagged under the weight of people who had gathered to watch a performance on the river. After the destruction of the bridges in the catastrophic flood of 1333, this was the first bridge to be rebuilt according to the designs of the Italian architect Giotto.Damaged again in 1557, the bridge was rebuilt by order of Cosimo I de' Medici, who commissioned the work to the Italian sculptor and architect Ammannati, who was already working on the neighboring Ponte Santa Trinita.At the end of the nineteenth century, the bridge was widened to facilitate the passage of carts and carriages.From this bridge opens very beautiful view to Ponte Vecchio bridge.
