Plac wytyczony został w drugiej połowie XII wieku. Nazwa placu nadana została w 1807 roku na część Świętej Marii Złoty posąg pochodzi z z 1590 roku. Cztery cherubiny powstały w roku 1638, symbolizując zwycięstwa nad klęskami głodu wojny, plag i herezji.
