About
The Alcala Gates are one of five ancient gates through which the road once led into the city. Massive and untouched by time, they are crafted in an unusual mixed style that lies somewhere between classicism and baroque.
The Alcala Gates are made of granite slabs and divided into five spans. The architectural complex features semicircular arches and bas-reliefs of large lion heads, which are complemented by rectangular passages adorned with the cornucopia, symbolizing the eternal prosperity of the Spanish capital. The central arch of the gates is decorated with a Latin motto and statues of Thomas and Genius with a shield, flanked by depictions of wisdom, courage, justice, and moderation, representing the fundamental human virtues.
