For more than 20:years, every time we come to London (twice or so a year), we always made sure to have afternoon tea at the Dorchester.quite possibly, today was the last time. We made a booking over a month ago and arrived on time. We were greeted nicely and show to our table. The older Italian guy in a white jacket was serving us and took our champagne and tea order. It took 30 minutes for our sandwiches to arrrive. We were NOT offered more or asked if we wanted more. The scones and sweets came out. Not once has anyone asked if we wanted our tea refreshed or more of it. Not once. Then our waiter disappeared and we never saw him again and had to ask someone else for the bill. I was rather dismayed that £18 was added for still and spark, ing water as we were not aware water is such a massive additional burden for the Dorchester that £110 per person doesn’t cover it. But what really made me angry was an automatic adding of 15% “service charge”. So instead of £220 expected bill it was £270+. Sure, it said on the bottom of the bill that “the service charge was entirely discretionary”. So you are trying to shame people into saying “no, take it off”? What is discretionary is if I decide whether and how much I tip. You are racing to the bottom with adopting such a crass new habit. Unfortunately, you just lost some loyal customers with the level of service and the extra sneaky charges that sure as hell were “not discretionary”
