I booked The Dover in Mayfair for my girlfriend’s 26th birthday. The staff were very friendly on arrival, and the dimly lit interior creates a lovely, intimate atmosphere. The restaurant is a bit tricky to find, but once inside it’s very stylish, with white tablecloths and a small, cozy dining area. It’s perfect if you’re looking for an intimate setting rather than a bustling, lively vibe. We started with some snacks: caviar on potato (delicious) and a lobster roll—both were excellent. I had the pasta arrabbiata, perfectly al dente and spicy, just how I like it. The mains, however, were a bit underwhelming. I had a burger (probably not the best choice for an expensive restaurant) and my partner had a steak. By that point, we were full, and the dishes didn’t impress as much as the starters. Fries were standard. For dessert, we had a cheesecake. I had emailed ahead to let them know it was a birthday celebration, hoping for a small gesture like a candle or a celebratory drink. We only received a single candle on the cheesecake and a verbal “happy birthday” from the waiter. Overall, I’d give it a mid-level rating. The food was good, and the setting is lovely, but for a birthday meal, it didn’t feel especially celebratory.
