Things were just off all around at Ginza St James tonight. They misplaced our reservation even though I had a printed confirmation, though they ultimately got us seated okay anyway. We were missing a place setting (no napkin or chopsticks) for one of our party (we eventually had to ask after dishes started arriving). The service was slow with unpredictable and sometimes very long gaps between dishes and other times dishes stacked right on top of each other. We ordered the Ginza menu (the top-end set menu at $150/pp). The food was overall good but no dishes were exceptional, and they didn’t even take the time to explain what dishes were, they just dropped the dishes off and left. They substituted a few shrimp for the whole lobster tail on the menu without any explanation. The Wagyu beef was supposed to be medium rare but arrived well done. Overall we were underwhelmed at best; the food was good but not great, and the service was absolutely off. We have been to much better Japanese restaurants in similar price ranges.

Black cod miso was great - taste and size. Prawn tempura tasted good but they did not use Japanese tempura flour. Sashimi was disappointing as each piece of fish was tiny.
