🚇 Holloway Road 🍺 £6.00 Gunners Lager The George is tucked away just off Holloway Road, close to Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in Islington, North London. The nearest Tube station is Holloway Road, located just around the corner. The pub was built in 1886, although there is evidence to suggest a pub existed on this site in the early 19th century. It sadly closed in 2018, when Peter Mara — who had managed it for 27 years — stepped away for personal reasons, saying it was “time to call it a day.” The pub briefly reopened in 2022 as The Stag, but this was short-lived. In March 2025, following refurbishment, it reopened as The George, reinstating its original name. This is a one-bar pub with a modern American sports-bar feel. The centrally located horseshoe-shaped servery is surrounded by a boarded floor, grey walls and a red ceiling. The decor includes conventional seating, Arsenal memorabilia and several large TVs. The beer line-up is entirely keg, offering a selection of familiar favourites, including Guinness. I opted to try the Gunners Lager — a decent pint, with an average price point. There was no food available at the time of my visit, but the pub has recently teamed up with @yardsalepizza, who now deliver to the pub. I arrived at around 7.30 pm on a dusky early evening in April. The pub was quiet, with a couple of locals dotted around enjoying an evening pint. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed, so settling in was easy. I had a nice chat with the owners, who were very friendly and welcoming. It’s great to see this pub back open and trading. It may not be the community local it once was under Peter, but recreating that era in the pub’s history would be difficult without him. This pub has always been a favourite with Arsenal fans and will undoubtedly appeal to match-day Gooners for pre- and post-match pints. It's OK here. Heavily Arsenal themed pub near to the Emirates. A couple of screens to watch sport.. the main one heavily reflecting light on a sunny day. Friendly staff
