Opened in 1867, this is one of Lisbon’s oldest and most iconic theaters. It was founded by writer and playwright Francisco Palha and designed in the Italian theatre style, featuring a horseshoe-shaped auditorium and classic stage layout. At the time of its construction, the surrounding Chiado district was already a cultural hotspot filled with theaters and opera houses. Since 1962, the theater has been under the ownership of FNAT (now INATEL), which continues to support its role as a vibrant space for performing arts.
