About

Among the urban tapestry of Hamburg-Mitte, the Bismarck Monument stands as a formidable attraction with its Art Nouveau design, courtesy of architect Hugo Lederer. Since its opening on June 2, 1906, this imposing statue of Otto von Bismarck has attracted history enthusiasts and curious minds alike. The monument intriguingly juxtaposes historical significance with modern dissent, as it now bears layers of graffiti and critical commentary. This transformation invites onlookers to contemplate the intersection of history and contemporary voices, offering a compelling tableau of past and present narratives at play.

Bismarck gets Banksy’d - St. Pauli style. A massive monument of imperial grandeur now covered in graffiti, questions, and critical commentary. What once stood proudly over the harbor now invites reflection more than reverence. The locals haven’t torn it down, but they’ve certainly spoken back. Remarkable to see how St. Pauli holds space for both history and protest. Worth a stop, even if just to witness the tension between past glory and present grit.

Une statue bien cachée derrière les arbres malgré sa taille... Il faut dire qu'elle est un peu encombrante dans l'histoire du pays.
