The Hackher Lion on Schlossberg, Graz This striking monument honors Major Hackher, who bravely defended Graz from Napoleon’s troops in 1809. Though he never surrendered, the fortress had to be demolished ("geschliffen") after the ceasefire—making this battle the reason the Schlossberg no longer has a fortress. The lion gazes west, toward France, as a symbol of defiance. A great spot for panoramic city views and a meaningful piece of Graz’s history.
