Ghent

Begin your exploration of the charming Belgian city on the banks of the Lys River: ancient buildings and bridges beautifully reflect in the water. Have a photo session on St. Michael's Bridge and visit the Church of St. Michael. Try Belgian waffles and fruit beer on Korenlei's promenade; admire the unique architectural ensemble of the Old Town. Nearby the Grass Bridge is the Design Museum.

Visit Gravensteen – a 12th-century castle that served as the residence of the Counts of Flanders, a mint, and a prison. The fortress walls, towers, and secret tunnels are well-preserved. Stroll through the medieval Patershol district with its restaurants and shops.

In the historic center of Ghent, be sure to see the Town Hall and the immense wooden canopy Stadshal. Enjoy a panoramic view of the city from the 14th-century bell tower's observation deck (an elevator is available). The top of the bell tower features the city's symbol – a dragon. In the Saint Bavo Cathedral, tourists are drawn to the unique 15th-century altar. Admire the medieval galleries of the Abbey.

Every summer, the massive Gentse Feesten takes place: 10 days, 13 venues, theatrical parades, and concerts. In December, a Christmas market opens near the Church of St. Nicholas. It's worth admiring the evening city during a river cruise.
