Room was quite dated, bathroom needs updating. Had thought rate included breakfast but was mistaken, so quite expensive for what was on offer Caught them on an off night, very slow poor service, all diners were kept waiting, starters & mains arrived together, very disappointing Lovely location, quiet village in countryside, very peaceful. Great meadow around the corner for dog walk off the lead

The Thorverton Arms is the sort of pub that makes you slow down a little. It is dog friendly, warm and has the feeling of a place that has grown naturally rather than been styled into submission. I cannot speak for the hotel rooms, but the food is worth talking about. The lunch menu is a small triumph. It is confident, thoughtful and pitched just right. The main menu is broader, with the classics alongside a few surprises. My only quibble was that we were handed three clipboards and two of them didn’t contain the lunch menu at all. It meant my companions defaulted to the main menu while I quietly congratulated myself for spotting the hidden option. One of those companions ordered something I had never seen before: a Yorkie wrap. Imagine a Yorkshire pudding rolled around a generous roast-style filling. It was moist, full of flavour and carried just the right amount of gravy-soaked indulgence. I was allowed a bite and it was as good as it looked. I had the Devon steak burger. Locally sourced topside, cooked perfectly, in a simple bun with rocket, sun-dried tomatoes, cheese and bacon. The bacon was not strictly necessary, as the beef had plenty to say on its own, but bacon is hard to refuse. The sides were spot on. Koffmann triple cooked fries, homemade coleslaw and potato salad. Fresh, crisp, creamy. Around £18 with extras, which is about right for a decent pub lunch in Devon. The Thorverton Arms feels like part of the village’s bloodstream. Their social media is full of proof. I will be back, dog in tow, possibly for another burger, possibly for a Yorkie wrap of my own.
