St Sampson's Social Centre is a grade ll listed former gothic style church which was closed in 1969. It has been altered and reopened as a community centre. It saves food and drinks Monday to Saturday and is staffed by volunteers. It is the only church in the country dedicated to St Sampson.

We stumbled upon this venue during their Immersive Fantasy Market event, and it turned out to be a wonderful surprise. While the space itself isn’t huge, they made great use of it, fitting in a wide variety of stalls without it ever feeling overcrowded. The atmosphere was spot-on—the building’s characterful interior added to the whimsical, fantasy vibe perfectly. As for the event itself, it was a real treat. Every stall felt unique, with offerings that ranged from forest sprite-inspired crafts and magical creatures to all sorts of fantastical bric-a-brac and handmade goods. It was clear that a lot of care went into curating the market. What made it even more special was that many of the vendors had travelled from different parts of the country and were dressed up to match the theme, adding a layer of immersion and personality you don’t often see at typical markets. This felt like a genuinely independent and community-driven event, and it left a lasting impression. Even beyond this particular market, it’s worth noting that the venue seems to host events and themed festivals regularly—so it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on what’s coming up. If you’re in the area, especially when something’s going on, I’d absolutely recommend stopping by. It’s a lovely space that clearly supports creative, niche, and engaging experiences. A great find!
