I’ve admired Cédric Grolet’s creations for years on Instagram, so I was excited to finally try his cakes and viennoiseries in London. Unfortunately, the reality was a huge disappointment. We opted for takeaway (thankfully), which spared us from spending even more ridiculous money on site. If I had paid £3 for a cake or croissant, I would have said “fair enough.” But at £18 for an individual cake, £9 for a Pain Suisse (which I personally enjoyed but my friend did not), and £7 for a plain croissant that was dry inside and nothing like the ones he showcases online—it felt completely unjustified. The fig cake was mediocre, the lemon tart was probably the best of the bunch, and the peach flower was by far the worst. It looked stunning but tasted of absolutely nothing—no flavour at all. It’s disheartening when something looks so beautiful on the menu and in pictures, but the real experience is the exact opposite. What makes it even sadder is that the more complex item (like the fig mousse cake, with multiple layers and effort behind it) was average, while the simplest and cheapest to make - the peach tart is still priced at £18 a piece, the peach should be made from the very best seasonal fruit, bursting with flavour, not something bland and supermarket tier. Overall, this visit completely ruined the dream I had built up from following him online. Very disappointed and absolutely not worth the money.
