When in London, we always try to eat at Bao. Pleasantly surprised to find one next to our hotel in Shoreditch. We had the cucumber salad, daikon and fried chicken bao, mushroom dumplings, and dan dan noodles. All fire. Literally spicy in an addictive way, but oh so good! Washed it down with some peanut milk to cool the flames. Szechuan fans, this is your spot!

I came in with high expectations, having known this chain since its early days, but I left utterly disappointed. Everything here is over-marketed, yet the actual experience is terrible. More than 45 minutes for two soups and two baos. The food is not worth the wait nor the hype, and the service is nonexistent, you’re forced to order and pay through a QR code while the staff actively avoids eye contact if you dare to raise an issue. This doesn’t feel like a restaurant at all, more like a glorified fast-food joint. Prices are outrageously high for what you get (3 thin slices of beef and my broth was literally drowning in garlic). The manager came over to apologize for a connection issue and gave us a discount on the bill, but that didn’t make up for an experience already spoiled by everything else. The shrimp bao was the only thing remotely decent, but certainly not enough to justify the visit. Overall, this place is a textbook example of style over substance, and I absolutely do not recommend it. If you’re a fan of asian cuisine, stay away.
