Located at the corner of Nowy Świat and Krakowskie Przedmieście in Warsaw, the Staszic Palace (Pałac Staszica) is a striking neoclassical building with deep roots in Polish scientific history. Built between 1820 and 1823 by architect Antonio Corazzi on the initiative of Enlightenment thinker Stanisław Staszic, it was created to house the Warsaw Society of Friends of Science . In front of the palace stands the iconic bronze statue of Nicolaus Copernicus by Bertel Thorvaldsen, unveiled in 1830 funded in part by Staszic himself symbolizing Poland’s scientific legacy. Though the building underwent a Russo-Byzantine makeover under Russian rule in the late 19th century, it was restored to its original classical form during the 1920s and again after near destruction in World War II, being fully rebuilt between 1946 and 1950 . Today, Staszic Palace houses the Polish Academy of Sciences and remains a vibrant center for conferences, lectures, and cultural events. Inside is the elegant Hall of Mirrors, used for events and decorated with busts of scholars a beautiful nod to its scientific heritage.
