Situated opposite the Warsaw Uprising Monument on the edge of the Old Town, Katedra Polowa Wojska Polskiego stands as a remarkable testament to Baroque architecture. Designed by Józef Fontana and opened in 1701, the cathedral has weathered history's storms, being originally completed in 1660, destroyed in 1944, and meticulously restored between 1946 and 1960.

Visitors can admire its simplistic beauty, emblematic of deep Polish military history and the resilience of the nation. The façade greets you with a large tympanum sculpture of the Holy Mary, surrounded by symbolic tablets commemorating various Polish military units. Inside, the Chapel of the Polish Soldier and the poignant Chapel devoted to the victims of the Katyn massacre provide solemn reflection.

For those interested in more than just architecture, a small museum in the basement offers exhibits showcasing Polish military history, adding an educational layer to your visit. With its strong church-and-state relationship, the cathedral features symbolic paintings of Polish battles and uprisings, steel grating with military decorations, and a bronze gate depicting historical battles.

Rated an impressive 4.7 on Google, the cathedral is suitable for children and offers a compelling visit that takes about 1-2 hours. This is a must-see attraction in Warsaw, combining spiritual beauty with profound historical significance.

Blisko Starego Miasta.

Americans may be used to the concept of separating church and state. But over 90% of Poland are baptized catholic, and the last poll I saw stated over 70% still considered themselves to be Catholics. So in Poland having an official Catholic cathedral is normal. The "lobby) (not the official name for this part of a church) is full of commemorative plaques from military units, as pictured.

Deo gratias!
