Once in the town hall, death sentences were handed out "in bundles" to witches, followed by their execution by fire to purify the body from sin. Times have changed, turbulent times have passed, and today, instead of the stern faces of judges, tourists are greeted by the chiming of ancient clocks and the ringing of bells, with only tours and stories of the harsh Inquisition reminding us of the past. In the bright corridors and offices of the town hall, the mayor of Salzburg and the city council hold their meetings, and in front of the entrance, each visitor is greeted by the statue of Justice, as if reminding us of the law that binds us all. The first floor of the building is occupied by shops, while the former conference hall space is now loved by thematic exhibitions.
