The Mentzendorff House appeared in Riga at the end of the seventeenth century and, over its existence, has changed seventeen owners. That's where the "coincidences" end, and the real beauty of the building begins, preserving the "canned" former way of life within.

Today, the Mentzendorff House is a unique museum, divided into three floors, a cellar, and a spacious attic. The first floor of the museum is dedicated to the kitchen, where treats are prepared for visitors in an old stove. Next to the kitchen, there is a glass workshop, where anyone can make their own stained glass, picking up a bit of craftsmanship from the local artisans. The second floor is occupied by "festive" rooms, and the personal chambers of the former owners are on the third floor. The house-museum holds over 2000 exhibits in total.

Loved that every room had a booklet with English translations for all the furniture, tchotchkes and paintings. Very wonderfully restored. Takes no more than a half hour to walk through and read the explanations. I was able to enter gratis as a journalist (thank you!). However it was a bit odd to have a staff member shadow you in each room. A bit stalkerish.
