Where one of Prague's landmarks now stands - the Powder Tower, back in the 13th century there was one of the thirteen defensive bastions of the Old Town located. Here ran the Royal Road, along which the crowned heads made their festive outings. After the construction of the New Town, the outpost began to lose its former glory and relevance, leading to its decline and dilapidation. It got to the point where the townspeople jokingly started calling the dilapidated structure "The Tattered Gates".

Only in 1475, during the reign of Vladislaus II, was the old tower finally demolished, and the foundation of the now-known Powder Tower was laid in its place. The Powder Tower was so named because it once housed a gunpowder store.

The dimensions of this historical landmark may not be too grandiose, at just 65 meters, but from a height of 44 meters, it offers extraordinary views of the Czech capital. There is a permanent exhibition: "The Royal Court - Life in Medieval Prague" and diverse photo exhibitions are periodically organized.

Went to see this on a Thursday (4/17/25) around 10:30am for a free tour (signed up through “Free Walking Tours Prague”). It’s cool to look at and see how it ties into other buildings around if. It has a lot of history so it is worth trying to book a tour if the Powder Gate would be apart of it. It is also very pretty at night!
