The age of this Catholic monastery exceeds 800 years. Today, just as in centuries past, it belongs to the Knights of Malta - it currently houses their embassy. In addition to religious services, concerts are also held in the church.

The name of the temple most likely comes from the chain that was used to block the river so that foreign ships could not pass without paying a toll. The architecture of the building blends early Baroque and late Renaissance styles - it looks quite austere from the outside, but the interior decoration is stunningly luxurious. The church grounds contain burials of members of the Knights of Malta, the earliest of which is marked with the year 1404.
