The territory where Neumarkt is currently located became part of the city of Dresden in 1548. During the early Baroque period, the square reached its maturity and acquired a unified compositional appearance with a distinct, unique charm. The Seven Years' War of 1756-1763 led to extensive destruction of the buildings here. Shortly afterward, the buildings on the square were reconstructed, but with a predominance of the late Baroque style.

Despite numerous dire events, Neumarkt has practically undergone no changes. It was only in 2005, following the consecration of the Frauenkirche, that the square gradually began to transform. Here, the reconstruction of quarters according to the old model is continuously underway.
