The Hofkirche Cathedral was constructed in Dresden over a span of 16 years, from 1739 to 1755. The building, now a prime example of late Baroque architecture, was designed by the Italian Gaetano Chiaveri.

At the time, Saxony was considered a Protestant state, so the construction of a Catholic sanctuary on its territory could have aroused the indignation of the local population. For this reason, preparations for the construction of the Hofkirche, intended to glorify Elector Augustus II the Weak, the son of Augustus I the Strong, were carried out in secret.

More than two hundred years later, in 1964, the Hofkirche Cathedral became a co-cathedral, and then, about 16 years after that, it became a cathedral. This was facilitated by the transfer of the bishopric from Bautzen to Dresden.
