The Gothic Quarter, consisting of narrow medieval streets, majestic mansions of the Catalan nobility, churches, and merchant houses, originally arose on the ruins of Roman structures. The locals proudly call it the gem of the Mediterranean city.

According to legend, Barcelona began with the Gothic Quarter. White geese have lived in the local Cathedral since time immemorial, and above the entrance to the Government Palace, there's a statue of St. George, who is piercing a dragon and is the patron saint of Catalonia. Here you can also find two museums-the Museum of History and the Museum of Sculptor Frederic Marès. Interestingly, the Gothic Quarter is also referred to as the "Egg Quarter," though the origin of this name is unknown.
