The original wooden theater opened in 1638 on Keizersgracht but was rebuilt several times after fires, including a major one in 1772. The current building, completed in 1894, was designed by Jan L. Springer and Adolf Leonard van Gendt in Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque styles. Formerly known as the Stadsschouwburg, it became Internationaal Theater Amsterdam in 2018 following a merger with the renowned Toneelgroep Amsterdam.
