This statue of the Archangel Raphael stands in the middle the ancient Roman bridge, looking out across the river towards the old city. Raphael is the traditional guardian and protector of Cordoba so there are many images of him in the city. In 1649, when the black plague swept through Cordoba, people looked to Raphael to help them. Deaths were relatively low and in gratitude (and maybe as future insurance), they placed his statue here in 1651. Taking no chances, they also placed statues at the Mezquita and later on the towering column by the Puerta Puente. We wondered about the seemingly random fish that he is holding by his side. Apparently this is a symbol of his ability to heal and protect. It refers to the biblical story where Raphael cured an old man’s blindness, by telling his son to take a fish gall bladder and rub it into his father’s eyes. The bridge and statue are at their most beautiful in the early evening when the bridge is lit and the lights of the old town are reflected in the darkening waters. It’s a perfect place for a pre-dinner stroll.
