Située à deux pas de la rue Neuve, la Place des Martyrs est bien plus qu’un simple espace urbain : c’est un véritable panthéon à ciel ouvert, témoin des luttes qui ont forgé la Belgique. Créée dans les années 1770-1780 sous le nom de Place Saint-Michel, cette élégante place de style néoclassique est devenue un lieu de mémoire nationale après les combats de la Révolution belge de 1830. Plus de 400 révolutionnaires tombés pour l’indépendance du pays y sont enterrés, et un monument central, érigé en 1838, rend hommage à leur sacrifice. 🕊️ Le calme qui y règne contraste fortement avec l’agitation commerçante toute proche.
