About

Bergen Cathedral stands as a striking testament to Gothic architecture in the city of Bergen. Originally opened in 1250 and dedicated to St. Olav, this historic church has witnessed centuries of change, having been rebuilt several times while retaining its medieval charm. Renowned architects Christian Christie and Peter Andreas Blix played a crucial role in its restoration during the 1880s, preserving its unique character - including the single rectangular tower crowned with a copper dome.

Visitors are often captivated by its magnificent organ and the stunning interior that complements the brilliant acoustics, making it a favored venue for music ensembles. The cathedral's front wall bears a unique historical artifact: a cannonball lodged during a naval battle, adding a touch of intrigue to its storied past.

This peaceful and photogenic sanctuary allows for contemplation and is a recommended must-see in Bergen. With no charge for entry, it's a simple yet enriching stop on any itinerary, perfect for a brief visit to absorb its tranquil ambiance and architectural beauty.
