Opened in 1898, the monument of Adam Mickiewicz, as one of the most influential and significant figures in Polish poetry, adorns the main square of Krakow. Like a ruby set in the Polish crown, created by the hands of the talented sculptor Theodor Rygier, it shines from its granite pedestal. It is surrounded on all sides by allegorical female figures addressing the people: Poetry, Science, Valour, and, of course, Motherland. Adam Mickiewicz himself was a patriot and a devoted fighter for the independence of his beloved country. The horrors of World War II did not spare Krakow, and in 1940, the artwork was transported to the distant Hamburg, where it lay gathering dust in a warehouse among other scrap metal. However, in 1955, the monument was successfully restored, and for more than a half-century, it has been delighting tourists. It is the most photographed attraction and an important part of the architecture of the Market Square.
