Opened in 1898, the monument of Adam Mickiewicz, as one of the most influential and significant figures in Polish poetry, adorns the main square of Krakow. Like a ruby set in the Polish crown, created by the hands of the talented sculptor Theodor Rygier, it shines from its granite pedestal. It is surrounded on all sides by allegorical female figures addressing the people: Poetry, Science, Valour, and, of course, Motherland. Adam Mickiewicz himself was a patriot and a devoted fighter for the independence of his beloved country. The horrors of World War II did not spare Krakow, and in 1940, the artwork was transported to the distant Hamburg, where it lay gathering dust in a warehouse among other scrap metal. However, in 1955, the monument was successfully restored, and for more than a half-century, it has been delighting tourists. It is the most photographed attraction and an important part of the architecture of the Market Square.

Pomnik, który chyba każdy kojarzy, na cokole stoi Adam Mickiewicz, który otoczony jest czterema muzami. Niestety oryginalny pomnik został zniszczony przez Niemców w czasie II wojny światowej, to co widzimy dzisiaj to jego rekonstrukcja z 1955 roku. Pod pomnikiem kręci się ogromna liczba osób, zwłaszcza wiele siedzi sobie na schodkach.

Très belle place. Au centre de Cracovie, Rynek. Un lieu à voir absolument. De jolis monuments, des églises avec des messes quotidiennes du matin au soir. Beaucoup de bons restaurants. De nombreuses boutiques typiquement polonaises: des produits locaux, des icônes, des bijoux en argent, de lambre, des étoles folklores, de la maroquinerie artisanale, des poupées folkloriques,... Des promenades en calèche, à différents tarifs. Nous avons payé 115 zlotis pour 15 minutes. Sachant qu'il y a des balades plus longues dans Cracovie. Les chevaux ont un arnachement magnifique et les voitures hypomobiles sont superbes. Tout autour, beaucoup de verdure, des arbres et de nombreux bancs pour profiter de cette nature paisiblement. C'est un lieu à visiter sans tarder!

We saw this statue while wandering through the main square—it’s pretty striking and hard to miss. It feels like a real centerpiece, and locals seem to treat it like a natural meeting spot. A respectful tribute right where all the city action is; it’s a nice pause between exploring the busy square.
