I was thinking about visiting the Bank of England Museum — the place where you can explore the history of banknotes and learn how carefully they’re designed to be secure and reliable. But lately, I’ve been struck by the irony. In the past five days, most shops and restaurants I’ve been to have refused cash. One shop even had an internet failure and suddenly only accepted cash — and we were the only ones able to pay. So it makes you wonder: how relevant is a museum celebrating our banknotes when London is / has quietly making / made them disappear from everyday life? And more importantly, how quickly could your day unravel if you rely entirely on cards and the system goes down? Maybe the real exhibit is happening outside the museum doors. And if cash is no longer accepted in daily life, perhaps taxpayers no longer need a Governor of the Bank of England to “protect” banknotes — that would save a few pounds in more ways than one.
