Cracking gem of a pub by the river. Typical Samuel Smith’s affair, so no phones policy applies (how dare people go to a pub to talk to each other?!?!). Spartan inside given the nature of regular flooding, but a great atmosphere. Give this one a call if you’re in York for a drink.

I like Sam Smiths pubs for the top quality beer. To me, it's like going to a living museum so I have no problem with the ban on mobile devices. I feel that this rule could be communicated in a far better way however, and even used to help market the brand. As it is now I get the impression that the staff are pressured to agresively enforce the rules (back to the living museum bit). I witnessed a lady being rudely told to get off her phone as she was trying to tell her husband what choice of drinks were on the tap. Some customers will need to pay by phone etc. The rules are there to encourage conversation, not to prevent the patrons from buying the beer so please rethink your strategy and grow up a bit Mr Smith; I don't want to see these pubs close down.
