It's Picnic time! Reads the jolly sign placed lovingly outside Sourdough Sophia - Highgate. I visited this fine cafe on a sunny friday morning in early August 2025. Conditions were good, vibes even better. I had just completed a number of hill repeats up the nearby swains lane and highgate hill, a mecca for north London cyclists. This in preparation for 'Urban hillclimb', a closed road hillclimb up Swains lane organised by the London cycling campaign. This event sees the usually quiet Swains lane transformed for a day into a festival of lycra clad grunters hauling their bodies and bikes up the short, steep ramps of the lane to the adoration of thronging crowds of literally tens of devoted spectators. Back to Sourdough sophia though - slight note on the service - we arrived at 8:05 for an advertised opening of 8:00 and were given short shrift by the staff upon querying when they would be able to serve us a morning campachoochoo or hot drink of choise. Otherwise the cafe seemed fantastic, the toilets flushed well and the coffee and pastries were top quality. Worth a visit ig you're in the area be it for walking, swimming or cycling!
