Tribute to the portuguese queen Catarina de Bragança. The statue was designed by the american artist Audrey Flack. This is a replica of the one commissioned by the Portuguese community in Queens, under the association Friends of Queen Catherine, who ended up not putting the original up due to the contest of Queen's black community who argued she was a symbol of slavery and colonization. It is usually admitted that the name of the city comes after this queen, a probable but not proved homage as she was married to the king who got New York under British sovereignty (from the dutch). For Portugal, this Queen was detrimental in the Alliance between the British and the Portuguese, and in the war of Restauration that brought back the separation of the crowns of Portugal and Spain. She is particularly famous for being the queen who introduced the 5 o'clock tea, and novelties of the time, like the fork, Opera, and dressing fashion.
