About

"Shakespeare and Company" is more than just an ordinary store. This place has been and continues to be a gathering spot for the bohemian crowd - writers and poets. It's worth noting that there were two stores with the same name; one of them, owned by Sylvia Beach, was precisely called "Shakespeare and Co". It was in operation from 1919 to 1940, and it closed because the owner refused to sell a book to a German officer. It never reopened.

However, in 1951, an entirely new shop appeared with a new owner, George Whitman (the grandson of the American poet Walt Whitman), and in a new building. It took on the role of a sanctuary for the Parisian bohemia. In 1964, following Sylvia Beach's death, the shop was renamed "Shakespeare and Co". After the owner's death, the store continues to operate and, in addition to selling books, welcomes writers and poets within its halls. Perhaps, if you visit, you might bump into some literary celebrity at the door.
