A group of us ended up in Macca's Bar & Grill late the other night. The place was great—friendly staff, comfortable vibe, just what we were after. Everything was going swimmingly until one of our friends—who is, I should point out, not remotely Irish—appointed herself the pub's cultural ambassador. She paused mid-conversation, looked around the room, and announced to the table, "You know, the music in here really isn't Irish enough." We all looked at each other. The pub was playing some decent classic rock, but because the name was "Macca's," she'd apparently built up an expectation of hearing a live céilidh band. "I was expecting The Pogues, maybe a bit of fiddle music," she said with a sigh. "This is just... music." So, a word of warning. If your non-Irish friend has very specific and unfounded expectations about Celtic folk music, she might be let down. For the rest of us just looking for a great pub with a good atmosphere for a late-night drink, Macca's is spot on.

Good pub. The beer is £1.50 more than it should be. Carling in Whitefield should never be £5/pint. Other than that it's OK.

This is a great spot. Perfect location, good food and live entertainment, usually an Irish guitar vocalist. Best Guiness in North Manchester and 2 mins from the met.
