About

The Valley of the Fallen is a monumental and architectural complex erected in memory of the many thousands of victims of the civil war. It is located near the famous Escorial Monastery in the rugged mountains of the Guadarrama.

Interestingly, all the elements of the man-made complex are situated both inside and on the surface of the rock. The top of the Valley of the Fallen is adorned with the largest cross in the world, which has an elevator inside. A Christian basilica is carved into the rock, whose organ's sound can be heard at a record distance of ten kilometers. Additionally, the Valley of the Fallen is inhabited by Benedictine monks who, in between prayers, manage the upkeep of the basilica and cultivate small plots of land.
